While it causes significant daytime somnolence due to sleep fragmentation, it rarely results in falling asleep mid-sentence. Utilizing soft music is a common relaxation technique that can help lower the heart rate and reduce cortisol levels before bed. For many individuals, this serves as a positive sensory cue for sleep and is an acceptable component of a bedtime routine. Unless the music is disruptive or too loud, it is considered a supportive habit.

Administering analgesics 30 minutes before bed is an appropriate intervention for pain-related insomnia. Managing physical discomfort allows the client to relax sufficiently for sleep onset and prevents nocturnal awakenings caused by pain surges. This timing aligns with the pharmacokinetic onset of most oral pain medications to ensure comfort at the time of retiring.

Hypersomnia, or excessive daytime sleepiness, is a significant clinical finding but is less common as a primary presenting complaint than insomnia. While it occurs in conditions like Kleine-Levin syndrome, it is often a symptom of another disorder rather than the primary reason for a clinic visit. Most patients with hypersomnia are actually suffering from sleep deprivation or apnea.

Narcolepsy is a relatively rare neurological condition affecting approximately 1 in 2,000 individuals. While it is a serious disorder requiring specialist management, its low prevalence means it is not the “most common” complaint. Clinics see far more cases of behavioral and stress-induced insomnia than primary narcoleptic sleep attacks.

Enuresis, or bedwetting, is a parasomnia primarily seen in pediatric populations and is usually managed by pediatricians or urologists. While it can be a part of a sleep evaluation, it is a specialized complaint rather than a general one. It does not represent the majority of cases seen in an adult-focused or general sleep disorder clinic.

Deprivation of REM results in a total loss of dreaming opportunities during the period of restriction, rather than an increase. While a REM rebound occurs after sleep is restored, the deprivation period itself is characterized by the absence of these cycles. Therefore, it is impossible to have increased dreaming while the specific stage is being withheld.

Sleep deficiency, particularly the loss of REM, is known to produce increased sensitivity to painful stimuli rather than a decrease.
