Gabapentin is an anticonvulsant and neuropathic pain medication that has no role in treating enuresis. It works by modulating calcium channels and is primarily used for seizures, neuropathic pain, and restless leg syndrome.

Laxatives. While constipation can contribute to enuresis by exerting pressure on the bladder, laxatives do not directly treat bedwetting. Instead, addressing constipation may help reduce nocturnal enuresis in some cases.

SSRIs. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are used for depression, anxiety, and OCD but have no primary role in enuresis treatment. In some cases, they may actually cause urinary retention or incontinence as a side effect rather than improving enuresis.

Sudden onset of psychotic symptoms in less than two months. The DSM-5 criteria do not define brief psychotic disorder with a two-month duration. If symptoms persist beyond one month, another diagnosis, such as schizophreniform disorder, may be considered.

Sudden onset of psychotic symptoms in less than one year. Psychotic symptoms lasting up to one year are more indicative of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder, not brief psychotic disorder.

Sudden onset of psychotic symptoms in less than six months. Psychotic symptoms lasting longer than one month but less than six months are consistent with schizophreniform disorder, rather than brief psychotic disorder.

Deceitful. Deceitfulness is a core symptom of conduct disorder. It includes lying, manipulating others, shoplifting, and breaking promises for personal gain. This behavior is often done without guilt or remorse.

Aggressive towards people and animals. Physical aggression is a defining feature of conduct disorder. Individuals may bully, threaten, fight, use weapons, or show cruelty towards animals without regard for others' safety.

Destroying property. Conduct disorder includes deliberate destruction of property, such as vandalism, arson, or breaking into buildings, often as a way to exert control or express defiance.

Haloperidol (Haldol) is a first-generation (typical) antipsychotic, which has a higher risk of extrapyramidal symptoms (EPS) but a lower risk of metabolic syndrome compared to second-generation antipsychotics.

Aripiprazole (Abilify) is a second-generation (atypical) antipsychotic with a lower risk of metabolic side effects. It has a partial dopamine agonist mechanism, which makes it less likely to cause weight gain, dyslipidemia, or glucose intolerance.

Lurasidone (Latuda) is a second-generation antipsychotic with a lower metabolic risk compared to other atypical antipsychotics. It is generally considered weight-neutral and has minimal effects on glucose and lipid metabolism.

Restlessness and unable to sit still. This describes akathisia, a movement disorder characterized by an intense feeling of restlessness, often seen as a side effect of antipsychotic medications.

Tongue rolling and lip smacking. These are hallmark symptoms of tardive dyskinesia, a late-onset movement disorder caused by long-term use of dopamine-blocking agents. It involves involuntary, repetitive movements of the mouth, face, and limbs.

Tremors at rest, bradykinesia, and shuffling gait. These symptoms are characteristic of Parkinsonism, an extrapyramidal side effect of dopamine-blocking medications. It mimics Parkinson’s disease and includes rigidity, tremors, and slow movements.

Needs to be taken care of. Individuals with dependent personality disorder (DPD) have an excessive need for care and reassurance. They rely heavily on others to make decisions and take responsibility for their daily life.

Conflict avoidance. People with DPD avoid conflict and disagreement out of fear of losing support or approval from others. They may go to great lengths to maintain relationships, even if they are unhealthy.

Afraid to be alone. A strong fear of being alone is a core feature of DPD. Individuals may feel helpless or unable to function independently, leading them to tolerate mistreatment or stay in dependent relationships.

Dramatic. Individuals with HPD exhibit excessive emotionality and attention-seeking behaviors, often overreacting to minor situations. Their interactions tend to be theatrical, exaggerated, and highly expressive, driven by a deep need for validation. This dramatic presentation can make their emotions seem intense but superficial, affecting personal and professional relationships.

Center of attention. A key feature of HPD is the constant desire to be the center of attention, leading to excessive efforts to draw focus in social settings. They may use flirtation, provocative behavior, or exaggerated stories to remain the focal point. If attention shifts away, they may become distressed or act impulsively to regain it, often without considering long-term consequences.

Emotionally shallow. Despite their expressive and intense emotional displays, individuals with HPD often lack emotional depth and sincerity. Their emotions can rapidly shift and may seem inconsistent or exaggerated, making it difficult to form genuine, long-lasting relationships. This superficiality often stems from their reliance on external validation rather than internal emotional awareness.

Believes thoughts are being transmitted to others. This describes thought broadcasting, where individuals believe that their thoughts are being sent to others or that people can hear them without speaking. This is a distinct delusion seen in psychotic disorders like schizophrenia.

Believes thoughts are being controlled. This aligns with delusions of control, where a person believes that an external force is controlling their thoughts, feelings, or actions. This is different from thought withdrawal, which specifically involves thoughts being stolen.

Believes aliens are inserting thoughts in someone's brain. This describes thought insertion, where individuals believe that outside entities (e.g., aliens, the government) are implanting thoughts into their mind. While related, this differs from thought withdrawal, which involves the removal of thoughts rather than their insertion.

Severe temper outbursts. Disruptive Mood Dysregulation Disorder (DMDD) is characterized by frequent, severe temper outbursts that are out of proportion to the situation. These outbursts can be verbal or physical and occur at least three times per week, persisting for one year or more.

Struggle to regulate emotions. Individuals with DMDD have difficulty managing emotions, particularly anger and frustration. This emotional dysregulation leads to persistent mood instability, which interferes with daily functioning at home, school, and in social settings.

Chronic irritability. Persistent irritability is a hallmark of DMDD, with children and adolescents experiencing near-constant irritability between temper outbursts. Unlike episodic mood disorders like bipolar disorder, DMDD symptoms are chronic and ongoing without distinct mood episodes.

Lacks empathy. Individuals with narcissistic personality disorder (NPD) show a profound lack of empathy, often disregarding the feelings and needs of others. They may appear emotionally detached and struggle to recognize or validate other people’s experiences, leading to superficial and exploitative relationships.

Takes advantage of others. A key characteristic of NPD is a pattern of exploiting others for personal gain, whether in professional, social, or personal relationships. Individuals with NPD often manipulate people to maintain their sense of superiority and entitlement, showing little remorse for their actions.

Needs constant admiration. People with NPD have an excessive need for admiration and validation to support their inflated self-image. They may seek praise, attention, and recognition, becoming defensive or hostile when they feel unappreciated or criticized.
