Nursing Interventions for Patients Receiving Oxygen Therapy
- Assess the patient’s need for oxygen therapy based on their history, physical examination, vital signs, ABG results, pulse oximetry readings, and clinical manifestations.
- Obtain a prescription for oxygen therapy that specifies the type of device, FiO2 or flow rate, duration, frequency, and indications for changing or discontinuing the therapy.
- Explain the purpose, benefits, risks, and procedure of oxygen therapy to the patient and their family members.
- Select the appropriate oxygen delivery device according to the prescription and the patient’s condition, preference, comfort, and tolerance.
- Apply the device correctly and securely to ensure adequate oxygen delivery and prevent dislodgement or leakage.
- Adjust the flow meter to deliver the prescribed FiO2 or flow rate.
- Connect the device to a humidifier if indicated to prevent mucosal dryness and irritation.
- Monitor the patient’s response to oxygen therapy by observing their respiratory rate, depth, rhythm, effort, breath sounds, skin color, level of consciousness, mental status, etc.
- Evaluate the effectiveness of oxygen therapy by measuring their PaO2 or SaO2 using ABG analysis or pulse oximetry.
- Document the type of device, FiO2 or flow rate, duration, frequency, response, effectiveness, complications, and education provided for oxygen therapy.
- Educate the patient and their family members on how to use and care for the oxygen delivery device, how to recognize and report signs of hypoxia or hypercarbia, how to prevent complications, and when to seek medical attention.
- Implement safety measures to prevent fire hazards, such as avoiding smoking, open flames, sparks, or flammable materials near the oxygen source, using cotton or wool clothing and bedding, and grounding electrical equipment.
