What Is Seizure?
Seizure happens when the abnormal electrical signals are fired rapidly for neurons in the brain. In most cases, this takes place throughout the brain thereby affecting both sides hence referred to as generalized seizure. However, when the seizure affects a particular area of the brain then it is known as a focal or partial seizure.
Seizures can happen to both adults and children. Moreover, it happens due to severe acute conditions such as brain tumors, acid-base imbalances like acidosis, hypoglycemia, alcohol withdrawal high fever illness, and much more. However, when the conditions are rectified, the seizures always stop.
However, some patients experience epilepsy. Epilepsy refers to when a patient experiences frequent seizures due to a chronic condition of some type. Some of the common chronic conditions are congenital brain defects, stroke, traumatic brain injury, long-lasting effects of an infection, etc.
What Are The Different Types Of Seizures?
There are two main types of seizures, generalized and focal. Generalized seizures have several subtypes:
Tonic-Clonic Seizures
This is most likely what you think of when you imagine a patient having a seizure. In tonic-clonic seizures, the patient abruptly loses consciousness, with their whole body stiffening and shaking. Furthermore, the patient may lose control of their bladder, bite their tongue, and thrash about uncontrollably. It is very important to keep the patient SAFE during a tonic-clonic seizure as injury is a very real concern. Safety will be a key component of any seizure care plan
Tonic Seizures
It is a type of seizure that causes the muscles to stiffen, usually the muscles of the back, legs, and arms. Patients having a tonic seizure are at high risk for falls if the seizure occurs while standing or even sitting.
Clonic Seizure
In clonic seizures, the patient will exhibit repeated or rhythmic jerking of the muscles. You’ll often see these in the face, neck and arms.
Myoclonic Seizures
This is a seizure type where one will typically have a sudden onset of brief twitches or jerks of the legs and arms.
Atonic Seizures
Have you ever heard about “drop seizures?” They involve a loss of muscle control, causing the patient to suddenly fall or collapse.
Absence Seizures
Also referred to as “petit mal seizures”, they are a type of seizure that occurs most commonly in children and exhibits as staring off into space with or without subtle body movements. Moreover, these movements typically include blinking eyes or lip-smacking.
