Allocated Time

The maximum duration for the NXLEX is 6 hours, with voluntary breaks after the first two hours and the next after three and a half hours, counting toward the 6 hours allocated.

Number of Questions

The exam has 265 questions; you must answer at least 75 questions, 60 of which are scored, and the extra 15 serve as unscored or pretest questions.

Read and Understand the Questions and Responses

Take your time carefully reviewing the questions and all responses. Avoid making premature decisions or guessing.

Seek Out Keywords

Avoid any responses that contain absolutes such as never, always, all, every, only, must, except, none, or no.

Avoid Reading Too Much Into the Question

Never assume anything that hasn't been said explicitly, and don't give the question any further context than the intended one. Answers that contain these terms are often incorrect since they disqualify and restrict even the answers that could be right.

Rule Out the Incorrect Responses

To improve your chances of choosing the correct response, cross out any erroneous or inappropriate answers!

Keep an Eye Out for Grammatical Errors

If a question provides an unfinished sentence, the appropriate response should turn the sentence into a proper, grammatically accurate, and complete response. Also, ensure there is adequate subject-verb agreement.

Rephrase the Questions

To use the rephrasing technique, you must clarify the question by interpreting or translating it into your own terms. You can choose the correct answer by accurately reading the question and then rephrasing the question stem. Rephrasing the question in your terms will enable you to cut out unnecessary information and focus on vital information.

Make an Educated Guess

If you cannot determine the appropriate response after carefully reading a question, select the response that provides more facts.

New Types of Questions

The test consists of new question types. They can be found in the test's Special Research Section, which appears once the candidate has completed it. These questions don't affect your score and are intended to assess the viability of the test question rather than the test-taker.

Recheck

Many test-takers answer the question poorly because they must remember to double-check their response using the stem. Please return to the stem and confirm that your selection addresses the question after selecting the correct response option and removing it from the distraction. Assessing the four choices for the stem rather than each other is helpful. After reading the stem, consider if the first option compares with the second option, followed by the second option until you have analyzed all the responses. Using this procedure will help with the elimination process.

Nclex Question Types

Multiple-choice Questions

You are provided four options and information about the client's circumstances in these questions. These are the most typical kinds of questions.

Fill-in-the-Blank Questions

This format is typically employed to calculate the IV flow rate or pharmaceutical dosages. For your response, enter a number in the box. A response can be rounded off when instructed by the question or after the computation. If needed, enter the decimal point.

Multiple-Response Questions

You must check all the options relevant to the details the question is asking. There can be more than one correct response, but that does not mean there will be a partial score.

Ordered-Response

In this format, you will be required to drag & drop your tasks as a nurse in the desired order or priority using the mouse. Be specific about the correct sequence as per the instructions.

Figure or Hotspot Queries

The layout of these questions is generally accompanied by images and illustrations. That might include tables and charts with a region you must click on or point at. There is also a possibility that the multiple-choice questions constitute numbers.

Chart/Exhibit

A problem is illustrated with a chart or illustration. You will have three tabs or buttons to click to get the data required to respond to the question.

Graphic/Illustrative Option

These questions use images instead of words. There are circles before the responses, which you should click to select your answer.

Audio

To respond to a question in this format, you must first hear a sound. You must click the sound icon while wearing the included headset to play the sound. The sound will be available to hear as many times as needed.
