NACE Foundations of Nursing

The Nursing Acceleration Challenge Examination (NACE) is among the seven examinations the National League for Nursing (NLN) offers. The main objective of this examination is to evaluate the previous learning and experience of licensed practical nurses seeking advanced placement in registered nursing programs. The NACE helps the faculty make placement decisions about the students already selected for admission. Nursing programs use NACE to measure knowledge of health issues and conditions nurses encounter.

NACE Format

NACE Foundations of Nursing has 200 questions. This computer-delivered exam has some of its questions as multiple-choice; while others will ask you to select all that apply. Exam takers will have four hours to answer all the questions.

The individual NACE questions will examine situations that involve clients with common health issues. When you answer each question, you must use your knowledge of the nursing process. Additionally, you must access, analyze, plan, implement, and evaluate before finding the correct diagnosis.

Students will have to answer different questions on health conditions. Some of the health condition questions are on:

• Loss of consciousness
• Pre-and post-operative care
• Chronic illness
• Electrolyte imbalance
• Death and dying
• Infectious disease
• Pain, stress, and fluid

Any student's success on NACE will rely on the ability to recall symptoms, mastery of terminology, apply effective treatment methods for clinical environment conditions, and knowledge of the proper use of medications.

NACE Outline Review

NACE questions relate to maintenance, promotion, normal and abnormal findings, health restoration, treatment modalities, nutrition and drugs, and nursing interventions.

NACE is divided into four categories, namely:

Basic Health Needs

In this category, there will be questions on psychological and psychosocial.

• Psychological Needs: Psychological needs comprise hygiene and comfort, growth and development, rest and sleep, fluids and electrolyte balance, respiration and circulation, exercise and ambulation, body alignment, elimination, and safety.
• Psychosocial Needs: Psychosocial needs comprise spiritual preference, cultural influence, loss and death, defense mechanism, self-esteem, sexuality, security, self-actualization, and stimulation.

Communication

The second category students will tackle the question is communication. In this category, they will tackle documentation questions and non-verbal and verbal communication.

Medical Administration General Principles

The third category is the Medical Administration General Principles. This category reviews students' knowledge and competence with the general principles of medication administration.

Ethical, Moral, and Legal Issues

The last category will assess the student's understanding of the ethical, moral, and legal issues they encounter in nursing practice.

NACE Delivery Types

Every nursing program has a guideline and rules for delivering the NACE foundations of nursing. However, there are universal standard requirements. Here are the two main common conditions.

Remote

All the exam takers doing NACE by remote proctor need to ensure their testing area and computer system meet the minimum requirements as required by the testing service.

Some of the minimum requirements for most of the testing services are:

• Ability to use video and sound
• High-speed internet access
• Use the most current browser version
• Ability to download the applicable program used for testing
• Reference materials removed and out of reach
• Ability to be undisturbed during the entire examination time

On-Site

NACE testing location can either be at an off-site testing center or on campus. All the exam takers sitting for the NACE on-site will use the testing center selected for them by the nursing program. The exam takers must present their documentation, such as proctor-fee receipts if any, and identification to prove their real identity.

NACE Scoring

The raw score will be displayed after you complete the examination. The official score will be sent to your nursing program. After releasing your official score to your nursing program, you can always log on to your NLN account and view your official report.

The passing score is 75%. However, the nursing program will determine the passing level. Additionally, the nursing programs are mandated to select a stringent passing score. The NACE will be valid for three years from the exam date.

In case a student fails their NACE, NLN does recommend a retest policy after every six months. However, the nursing program will set the retest policy.
