Why NCLEX uses the CAT

To improve exam efficiency, CAT uses both contemporary evaluating theory and computer technology. Among CAT's advantages are:

How the NCLEX's computer adaptive testing works

The scoring system for computer adaptive testing (CAT) is a dynamic procedure that changes in real-time based on the test taker's performance. Each NCLEX question has different difficulty levels depending on the candidate's prior responses. An algorithm chooses questions and determines the candidate's ability level based on how well they do

In other words, if you correctly answer a question, the computer recalculates your ability. It shows you a more complex question that you might have a 50% probability of answering correctly. On the other hand, the computer will ask you a new question that is marginally easier if you respond to a previous one wrong. This cycle continues until the computer determines that your competency level is above or below the passing requirements, or until you run out of time. The NCLEX-RN and NCLEX-PN have the same maximum time limit of five hours and minimum and maximum item counts of 85 and 150, respectively.

How the CAT scoring works

The test starts with a medium-difficulty question: The candidate is given a medium-difficulty question to answer first.

Evaluation of the provided response: The algorithm then determines whether the response is correct or erroneous.

Update the ability estimate: Next up, the algorithm modifies the candidate's ability level assessment based on the response provided.

Choosing the subsequent question: The algorithm finally selects a new question based on the most recent ability estimate. The ability estimate is raised if the candidate responds appropriately to the question and lower if they provide an incorrect response.

Steps 2 to 4 are performed for every additional question until a stopping requirement is satisfied. This usually happens once the algorithm has acquired sufficient data to assess the applicant's abilities.

Establish the pass/fail result: After the stopping requirement is satisfied, the candidate's skill level is contrasted with the preset passing score. The candidate passes the exam if their ability estimate is higher than the passing mark; if it is lower, they are unsuccessful.

What are the pass/fail rules?

The computer utilizes the following rules to determine if you have passed or failed the exam:

The 95% Confidence interval rule

Once the computer determines with 95% accuracy that a candidate's skill is either obviously above (passing) or below (failing) the passing criterion, the exam ends.

The Rule of Maximum Length:

The candidate passes if the final ability estimate is the required minimum or above. On the other hand, they fail if the final ability estimate is lower than the required passing score.

The Run-Out-Of-Time Rule:

Suppose a candidate needs more time before completing the maximum number of items. In that case, the computer cannot determine with 95% accuracy whether they passed or failed the exam.

Then, a different set of guidelines must be put in place:

1. The exam will be deemed a success if the candidate responds to the necessary questions.

2. If the candidate completes all required items, the exam is scored based on the final ability estimate generated from responses to all completed items.

3. You pass if the final assessment of your abilities is higher than the required passing score.

4. You are unsuccessful if your final ability eclipses the required passing score.
